What is the future of the Middle East with the US presidential race

It is very hard to decide who will prove best for the Middle East, Joe Biden or Donald Trump. However, both have different opinions regarding the conflicts of the Middle East. Back to June 27, 2024 when Trump promised that he will end the war in Ukraine if he gained power again. However, in that debate, Trump did not provide any solution related to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Instead the former president of the United States criticized Joe Biden for not supporting Israel.

He also called him “Palestinian” for his perceived lack of backing. Trump also claimed that if he is re-elected again then no nation would harm Israel such as Iran and Hamas. He also said he wouldn’t restrict Israel’s actions in Gaza, despite the violence continuing during Biden’s presidency. Then on July 21,2024 Joe Biden decided to take a back step from the election campaign and introduced Kamala Harris as a new candidate. In her first speech, Harris seemed to advocate for peace and cease-fires in the Middle East, similar to US goals in Ukraine.

On July 25, a meeting was held between Kamala Harris and Israel’s prime minister  Benjamin Netanyahu. At the end of this meeting Kamala concluded that it’s time to end the conflict. She wants the solution that brings peace, keeps Israel safe and also frees all hostages. She also wants to stop the sufferings of the Palestinians in Gaza and give them freedom.

Kamala Harris also urged Israel’s prime minister to work on a plan that stops violence in Gaza.

He also wants Israel to free all hostages and help Palestinians to live normal lives with all facilities.

She also emphasized the need to quickly finish the United State-backed peace plan to help Palestinians.

At the same time, Harris also said that Hamas is a terrorist group. According to her,  pro-Hamas graffiti and rhetoric in the United States are not acceptable. Her stance clearly highlights that she wants a ceasefire but she also opposes Hamas.

This changing policy of the United State could significantly impact the tense situation in the Middle East.

The United State has been heavily involved in the Middle East matters because of many reasons. This region is rich in resources, especially oil, and contains vital shipping routes such as the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Suez Canal. All of these factors make the Middle East one of the important factors in global politics. Many people think that only for oil, the United States is there but the reality is totally different. The United States itself produces a large amount of oil and is self-sufficient. So, the real interest of the US lies in controlling the access to oil. This control has a great impact on the western countries. It also influences the economy of rivals like China. Because this nation also depends on Middle East oil.

Additionally, the United State sells a massive amount of military equipment to the region, totaling $238 billion in 2023. This arms trade helps the U.S. influence the Middle East. Israel, as a major ally, receives significant aid and strengthens American influence. The US has also been involved in toppling democratically elected governments through direct action or supporting coups.

After the 2016 coup attempts the relationship between the United State and Turkiye got really bad. This is because the United State refuge to Fetullah Gülen, who planned the coup, and his followers. Gülen’s group, FETÖ, is a big threat to Turkish security and democracy. However, Tuekiye blamed the United States and the US denied it. So, their relationship never got better. This clearly points out how the actions of the United States create different problems in the region.

Also, there’s worry about Trump possibly becoming the Republican presidential candidate, especially after an attack on him in Pennsylvania, which could impact US foreign policy and the Middle East. Plus, a new poll shows Harris is gaining surprising support from voters.

So, the current Middle East conflicts, economic problems and political turmoil will worsen if Trump becomes the next president of the United States. No matter who will gain power, Republicans or Democrats, it is important to find a solution  to stop the ongoing violence that Israel has intensified since October 7, 2023. This violence took lives of many people

Gaza is already in chaos, and without a peace agreement, the whole region could become even more unstable. This would create problems that the U.S. might struggle to handle, and it would have global consequences.
