The recent decision of President Joe Biden clearly highlights the United States’ concern about China’s growing power. He approved of changes to the US nuclear weapons strategy. This change reflects a broader shift in the US military’s approach to global threats.
After 9/11 the US military made the biggest move. They were not paying much attention to the severe war in the biggest countries but focused on fighting small terrorist groups. But in the last decade, the central focus of the United States again shifted. Now they again pay attention to major power countries like China and Russia.
Deterrence is the main goal now. It means that the United States want to familiarise China and Russia that their attack get a very severe response from the US. This strategy is detailed in the National Defense Strategy from October 2022, which calls for “integrated deterrence” involving the military, intelligence, and diplomatic efforts.
The strategy also explains how the arm’s focus collaborates in these efforts and will help with this. They are preparing for conflict in different areas such as land, air, sea, space, and online. This is because major powers can fight in all these domains.
The Pentagon uses a strategy named “dynamic force employment”. The aim of this strategy is to move the United States troops quickly around the world without any fixed schedule. This keeps the safety of allies especially when they face threats from Russia and China. For example, the United States may decide to send 10,000 troops to Poland. But these troops are not stationed there all the time. This action from the US makes Russia uncertain about the United State military power. Also, it shows support for NATO allies in Eastern Europe.
Another strategy is called” multi-domain operation”. In it the different military units work in air, land, sea and space. They also make different plans together. The teamwork means they can respond to the threats in different ways.
For instance, if there’s a challenge to US naval power, it doesn’t always need a direct naval response. Cyberattacks or space operations can also be used.
This way of working could compel China to rethink the Taiwan attack. They’d face not only direct military action but also potential disruptions to their military communications from US cyber and space operations.
China is boosting its power
Over the last 20 years, China has made progress in many fields such as its air, naval, and nuclear forces boost with the passage of time. As a result the United States also upgraded its military power. In this year’s budget program, the US set aside a good amount for new military programs. The figure is approximately $234.9 billion. In future, this money will be used to develop F-35 new fighter jets. These jets are used by the United States and its allies like Japan, South Korea and Australia. They will show the strength of the American military and help prevent threats from others.
China’s growing nuclear arsenal has worried US leaders. Even though President Obama wanted a world without nuclear weapons, his administration made the biggest upgrade to the U.S. nuclear arsenal ever. The Biden administration continues this by focusing on a modern mix of nuclear missiles and bombers.
What are the advanced technologies?
Back to 2019, when the Space Force was created. The purpose is to protect American space and also obey international laws. Satellites are also important in military and daily work. They work with Cyber Command to stop hackers from disrupting important systems like GPS.
According to a recent report, China is trying to attack US infrastructure. It includes power grids during conflicts. To defend against this attack, the US is trying their best to increase its military power.
The Pentagon is also using AI to create cheap, automated aircraft and boats. This strategy aims to match China’s growing military power with its own technology.
For the last few years, the United States has been trying hard to make strong alliances. Back in 202 when Russia invades Ukraine. At that time, NATO grew and the US sent more aid to Eastern Europe.
Also, the US has strong relationships with Japan and South Korea. The US is also partnering with the UK and Australia, including plans to sell advanced submarines to Australia by 2030. Overall, the US aims to avoid conflict with China and Russia, but new challenges are always arising.
