The mess left by the Biden- Harris administration in Afghanistan has made the world a more dangerous place. This chaos also increased the terrorism threats. It includes specific threats like the recent plot against Taylor Swift’s concerts in Austria. According to investigators, the organizations such as al Qaeda, ISIS, and ISIS-K played a role in radicalizing the teenagers who made the proper plan for the attack.
There is also a strong connection of Al Qaeda with the Taliban in Kabul now. At the same time, the factions of ISIS are currently opposed to each other. In the changing world of terrorism, no anything is permanent and constant. Alliances and rivalries shift frequently. It simply means that it is very difficult to understand the intentions of terrorism groups. This is because at one time they might cooperate with one party and be hostile to others. This dynamic nature of these organizations threaten global security. And also people faced different challenges due to this dual nature.
In 2021, the United State cut ties with Afghanistan. At that time, the country quickly became a prime spot for terrorists. The Taliban did not strongly control the matters and the chaos that the nation followed made it very accessible for the international terror organizations to thrive once again.
By October 2021, just weeks after the US and NATO left, high-ranking officials from the Biden Defense Department warned that both ISIS-K and al Qaeda were planning major attacks around the world. They predicted that ISIS-K could be ready to carry out attacks within six months to a year, while al Qaeda might need a bit more time to rebuild its capabilities.
After the departure of the United State, it was clear that Afghanistan was becoming a new base for Jihadism and al Qaeda. This was noted by the New Yourker in August 2021. The situation became more dire when the ISIS-K attempted an attack on the United State forces at Kabul airport during the evacuation.
Terrorists always choose crowded places to attack where the security measures are very less. They do not launch any attack on the locations with high-security such as airports. For example, in 2015 , ISIS carried out attacks on the Bataclan Theater and Stade de France in Paris. This clearly highlights how they exploit these popular spots for maximum impact. Furthermore, Hamas attacked a beach concert in Israel. This attack killed approximately 364 and took 40 hostages.
One of the branches of ISIS named as ISIS-K, also has many techniques to carry out attacks on distant places. They even target the areas that have tight security. Back to January 2024, when they attacked a memorial ceremony in Iran for Qassem Soleimani. ISIS-K did not care about the warning from the United State and attempted the attack. This incident took the lives of approximately 80 people and also highlighted the danger of these terrorist organizations.
Back to March 2024, when ISIS-K launched a terrible attack on the Crocus Theater in Moscow. It is a popular concert and shopping complex. Due to this attack many people died. And approximately 100 were injured. Although Vladimir Putin tried to shift the blame to Ukraine, it was clear that ISIS-K was behind the attack.
This horrifying event, particularly targeting Taylor Swift’s concerts, highlights how ISIS-K is becoming more daring and extending their influence. It’s concerning to consider that they might soon carry out attacks in America. The withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan has made us more exposed to such terrorist threats. This situation shows that we are at a greater risk now than before, and we need to be vigilant.
Many politicians and commenters forget that the American presence in Afghanistan kept terrorists away from launching different threats and attacks. For example, in late 2020, Senator Rand Paul claimed there was no significant terrorist threat coming from Afghanistan and mistakenly thought it was safe to withdraw troops. However, it was the United States who stood behind Afghanistan and prevented this nation from different threats and attacks.
Now that the troops have withdrawn, the level of risk has increased. What seemed laughable to Paul at the time is clearly not amusing now, as the dangers have become more apparent.
