Rising storm: Biden’s tough decisions amid Iran-Israel escalation

After the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the president Joe Biden has two main goals. One is to defend Israel from any terrorist attack and other is to stop the war between Israel and Hamas. According to him it is important to prevent the conflict from growing into a larger regional war. Over the last 10 months, the Biden administration is triest their best to stop the conflict by using diplomacy. They used US military presence and also took military actions when necessary.

They also have to manage the smaller conflicts not to become the large wars that could involve the United State directly. However, things changed in April. It was the time when Iran unexpectedly attacked Israel. This incident clearly expressed Iran’s shift and also made the situation more challenging. Iran has moved from using proxies to directly attacking Israel, which complicates America’s efforts to prevent direct conflicts between states. This time, the Biden strategy is not enough to keep the situation under control.

At that time, president Joe Biden took strict action against Iran. The United State targeted Iran’s allies with military strikes after they increased the attacks on the US due to the Gaza war. Firstly the Iranian target hits in Syria then facilities in Iraq. After this, finally militia leaders in Iraq.

In Yemen, where Iran-backed Houthis were attacking ships in the Red Sea, Biden’s team formed international coalitions to protect the ships and strike military targets. While the Houthis kept attacking, the coalitions managed to prevent a total halt of international shipping.

However, in April Iran attacked Israel with 300 drones of missiles. After this attack things changed. Iran attacked Israel in response to the death of Iranian commanders in Syria.  Despite intercepting most of the missiles and drones, Iran’s aggression continued, and if they had caused more damage, it could have led to a major regional conflict.

The region is surrounded by serious conflict again. Hezbollah recently attempted an attack that killed 12 children in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. This incident has set off a dangerous cycle of retaliation. In response to this attack, Israel killed the Hezbollah senior commander and this region vowed to retaliate. After the death of Hezbollah’s leader, the Hamas leader was also killed in Tehran. The death of these two great personalities was very shocking for Iran and they promised to take revenge.

In such conditions, the Biden administration is increasing its involvement by ending more and more military support. This aid includes aircraft carriers and fighter jets, and urging allies to press Iran to back down. However, all of these efforts could not stop Iran from attacking Israel. Also there have been no strong threats of punishment if Iran does it again.

Many officials claimed that neither Iran nor Hezbollah want to spread threats and war. They are just  seeking revenge in response to their great loss. if Iran ignores international pressure again, it could launch a larger attack, either directly or through its allies in Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, and Syria. Iran might even direct Hezbollah to strike first to weaken Israel’s defenses. This kind of response is risky and could easily lead to mistakes or unintended escalation.

If Tehran’s leaders feel their position at risk then this region might back down. So, Mr Biden should think twice before hitting the important targets inside Iran. The extra troops he sent could save the Israeli citizens and directly target Iran.

Also the leaders of European and Arab countries should change their plans. They could cut off all ties with Iran diplomatically by using economic pressure. In order to fight against Iran they should also work together.

Meanwhile, other issues are getting worse. Iran’s militias in Iraq and Syria recently attacked US forces, causing injuries. If Mr. Biden doesn’t respond, Tehran might keep attacking. Also, Israel’s recent strike in Yemen and rising attacks from Hezbollah in Lebanon show that tensions are growing, even with more American troops in the area.
