If you are thinking why the public are skeptical of politicians, look at Benjamin Neanyau’s recent speech to the United States Congress. This was his fourth address to Congress but the theme of the speech was old as before. He repeats that both nations Israel and the United State are fighting against barbarism. He also said that Iran is their biggest enemy. But this speech would be more attractive if Israel’s Prime Minister has achieved some targets in his long period of presidency.
Instead, under his leadership, Iran has gotten closer to having nuclear weapons and expanded its influence. This is the reason that people feel disillusioned. Leadership demands results, it’s just not making fake promises. Netanyahu’s speech was full of lies, expressing that after almost one year of conflict, the United States has not made any real progress in the Middle East.
The Israel’s Prime Minister is good at making it seem like peace is just around the corner. In order to fight Iran and its allies he also proposed an “Abraham Alliance” between Israel and Arab nations. This idea sounds good and if it works then it could help avoid more US military involvement. However, there are some doubts in his plans. Many peace-activists and pro-Palestinina are unhappy. Additionally high-ranking Israeli security officials, including a former Mossad chief and a former defense minister, are now calling him a serious threat to Israel’s safety. It seems like trust in his strategies is fading very quickly.
Netanyahu also got criticism from Rep. Jerry Nadler. Nedler, the leading Jewish member of the House, said that Netanyau is the worst leader in Jewish history. He also resembles Netayahu with the king who made a terrible decision 2100 years ago. Nadler believes that inviting Netanyahu was just a political tactic by Republicans to use the United State -Israel relationship for their own advantage. Nancy Pelosi who did not listen to the speech after meeting with hostage families was also criticizing him.
According to her, this speech was the worst in the history of Congress that Netanyahu gave. Only 30% of the American-Jews that support the speech while others oppose it strongly This raises the question of why he was invited in the first place, given how poorly his words were received.
Republicans also stand in favor of Netanyahu just because he knows how to use cultural politics and get benefits. He tried to show he has bipartisan support by thanking both Trump and Biden for backing Israel. But it’s clear from his speech that he favors one side more. In his speech he did not give any solution to handle the situation with Iran. He just gave the so-called idea of “Abrahamic Alliance.”
Instead, he praised a group at UNC and criticized “Gays for Gaza” protesters, playing into right-wing biases. Back in 2015, Netanyahu used his speech to attack Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, which led to the US withdrawing under Trump, partly due to Netanyahu’s influence. This caused Iran to ramp up its uranium enrichment, bringing it closer to making a nuclear weapon. It seems likely that his recent speech will just stall progress, as his actions have mostly made the situation worse for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Just focus on Iran as a problem can not bring peace between Israel and Palestine. If Netanyahu wants peace and reduces the ongoing tension then he should accept the ceasefire deal. He should also free the hostage. But Netanyahu shows disagreement about it, which has upset many. Also the family members of hostages are worried. They protested in D.C. and during the protest some were arrested.
Additionally, the Saudi leaders said they will only make deals with Israel if it ends its occupation of Palestinian lands.
How can we expect any new peace deal when the Israeli leader ignores the possibility of a new Palestinian state?
However these silly political games do not strengthen the bond between Israel and the United States. Also it does not lead to peace across the world, especially in the Middle East.
They only show how some people put their own egos before the bigger goals of both nations. American leaders need to stop supporting this person and understand what many Israelis have already figured out: there’s no hope for peace and stability in the region while he’s in power.
