The Decline in youth support for Israel: A wake-up call for America

Many things get complicated, when your closest ally starts causing problems. Hamas attack on Israel on Oct 7, killed approximately 1,139 Israelis. Due to this loss the whole world supported Israel as  it launched an invasion into Gaza. But when the world saw that Israel’s reaction was more severe, destroying different parts of Gaza then their opinion changed. Furthermore, the Israeli attack also caused thousands of civilian deaths,  where 2.1 million Palestinians live—half of them children, is in a terrible state. Additionally 30,000 civilians including women and children have been killed during the war. This big loss of Palestine raises a question about Israel’s action. This response of Israel has shifted international opinion.

Many countries criticize Israel’s behavior in Gaza. Due to commiting genocide in Gaza, Isreal faces legal action from South Africe. All of this was done at the International Court ofJustice. Recent surveys by Gallup show that most Americans now disapprove of what Israel is doing in Gaza, with 55% saying they don’t like it, while 36% support it. Additionally, a poll by CBS News and YouGov revealed that only 33% of Americans think President Biden is doing a good job with his approach to the war.

One of the strongest partnerships between 2 countries in the world is between Israel and the US. American backing has been crucial for Israel’s beginning and ongoing survival, especially considering the conflicts in its region. Israeli lobbyists hold significant influence in American politics. One of the American groups named as American Israel Public Affairs Committee(AIPAC) supports Israel. According to some latest reports, plans to spend $100 million this year to oppose congressional candidates who criticize Israel.

America is one of the nations that strongly supports Israel. House Speaker Mike Johnson said “ “God is going to bless the nation that blesses Israel…It’s also our biblical admonition. This is something that’s an article of faith for us.”

But lately, many people are speaking out against Israel, and it’s not just regular folks. Even a senator from Connecticut, Chris Murphy, has said that the fighting should stop. He said this on February 29th “ the appalling scenes from Gaza City today and the staggering civilian death toll that has already occurred in Gaza are not in Israel’s nor the United States’ interest, and they necessitate an urgent change in course.”

Israel’s best friends were very angry when Israeli soldiers killed innocent helpers from the World Central Kitchen in April. The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said, “If Israel doesn’t change its actions, we will change how we deal with them.”

Big Israel supporters were very angry, when they got to know that Israeli soldiers killed innocent helpers from the World Central Kitchen in April. According to US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken ““If we don’t see the changes we need to see, there will be a change in our policy.”

However most of the Americans still support Israel after getting to know about the behavior of Israel towards the innocent people.

According to Pew Research Center, most of the youngsters, aged 18-29 support Palestinian rather than Israel. Furthermore, many others think that Hamas is the culprit of the conflict.

Due to this thinking difference between the different generations, the relationship between America and Israel is not strong enough.  In Michigan, a state that can swing the vote in the presidential election, more than 100,000 people from the Democratic Party voted for “uncommitted.” This happened a lot in cities where there are many Arab-Americans.
